WordPress is reasonably SEO-friendly out of the box, but "optimized" is relative and depends heavily on how you configure it. The platform generates clean, semantic HTML, uses proper heading hierarchy by default, and handles basic on-page elements correctly. It also creates logical URL structures automatically and produces valid XML sitemaps without plugins. From a technical foundation standpoint, WordPress doesn't handicap you the way some website builders do.
That said, WordPress requires intentional setup to be truly SEO-optimized. The default permalink structure uses dated post slugs, which you should change to post-name or a custom structure for cleaner URLs. Your site needs proper configuration for Core Web Vitals—WordPress can be slow without optimization, and hosting matters enormously. You'll need to handle technical aspects like mobile responsiveness (usually fine with modern themes), schema markup (not included by default), internal linking strategy (purely your responsibility), and metadata. Most agencies add plugins like Yoast, Rank Math, or All in One SEO to fill gaps, though these tools can slow down your site if not properly managed.
The real advantage WordPress offers is flexibility. Unlike platforms with locked-down structures, you can implement custom solutions—breadcrumb schema, custom post types, programmatic redirects, or technical configurations that require developer access. This means experienced agencies can build genuinely optimized sites on WordPress where less flexible platforms would impose limitations.
For client sites, the practical approach is treating WordPress as a foundation that requires active optimization work. Choose a fast hosting provider, use a lightweight theme designed for performance, implement a quality SEO plugin to handle metadata and basics, optimize images aggressively, and use a CDN. Don't rely on WordPress defaults alone. The platform won't sabotage your SEO efforts, but it also won't do the optimization work for you. Your agency's knowledge and effort matter far more than the platform itself—which is actually why many agencies prefer WordPress. It's optimizable enough that your expertise directly translates into client results.
