There's no guaranteed path to first position—Google's algorithm considers hundreds of factors and your competition matters enormously—but you can meaningfully improve your rankings by addressing the core areas Google actually measures.
Start with search intent alignment. Google ranks pages that best answer what the searcher actually wants. If someone searches "best CRM for small business," they want comparison articles or reviews, not product pages. Research the top ten results for your target keywords and build content that matches that intent while being demonstrably better. This means more comprehensive information, recent data, actual user reviews, or clearer structure—something that makes yours the obvious choice. Content length matters only insofar as it lets you cover the topic thoroughly; 2,000 words of fluff loses to 1,200 words of genuine insight.
Technical SEO removes barriers to ranking. Your site needs fast load times (test with Google PageSpeed Insights), mobile responsiveness that actually works, clean URL structure, and proper internal linking that helps Google understand your content hierarchy. Fix crawl errors in Google Search Console, ensure your site structure is logical, and use heading tags correctly. These things don't push you to first position alone, but missing them will keep you out of contention.
Backlinks remain one of Google's strongest ranking signals. You need links from relevant, authoritative websites pointing to your content. This typically means creating something genuinely worth linking to—original research, comprehensive guides, tools, or data that other sites in your industry reference. Then you actively reach out to relevant sites that might link to it. Agencies often underestimate this: you could have the perfect on-page optimization and still rank fifth because competitors have better link profiles.
E-E-A-T signals matter increasingly, especially for competitive niches. Google wants to see evidence that you're experienced, knowledgeable, and trustworthy. This means byline attribution, author credentials, genuine expertise demonstrated through your content, and positive user reviews or ratings.
Realistically, reaching position one for medium to high-competition keywords takes months of consistent work across all these areas. For less competitive keywords, solid intent alignment plus basic technical SEO often gets you there faster. Focus on keywords where you can realistically become the best resource, not just trying to outrank whoever's currently winning.
