Rankings come down to two things: relevance and authority. Google needs to understand what your website is about, then trust that it's genuinely authoritative on that topic. Start with technical SEO basics—your site needs to load fast (aim for under 3 seconds), be mobile-responsive, have clean URL structures, and proper internal linking that distributes authority logically through the site. Use schema markup to help Google parse what your content is actually about. Crawlability matters too; make sure Google can actually access all your important pages without being blocked by robots.txt or noindex tags. These foundations are non-negotiable. Without them, even great content won't rank because Google can't properly evaluate your site.
On-page optimization comes next. Target specific keywords with realistic search volume and commercial intent—don't waste effort on vanity searches nobody makes. Your target keyword should appear naturally in your title tag, first 100 words of content, and at least once in your H1. But don't stuff keywords; Google is sophisticated enough to understand context. Create comprehensive content that's longer and more detailed than what currently ranks. If the top-ranking pages are 1,500 words, you should aim for 2,000-2,500 unless that's artificially padded. Answer related questions your audience is actually searching for, which you can find in Google's "People also ask" section and Search Console data.
Authority is where most sites struggle. Google measures this primarily through backlinks—links from other websites pointing to yours. Quality matters far more than quantity. A single link from a relevant, high-authority industry site is worth more than dozens of spammy links. Build links by creating genuinely useful content that people naturally want to reference, pitching that content to relevant publications in your industry, or reaching out to partners and complementary businesses. Don't buy links or exchange them in link farms. Your website's domain authority builds over time through consistent good-quality content and legitimate earned links. If you're working with clients, make sure you're measuring actual business results through Google Analytics, not just rankings. A #1 position for a search nobody makes won't drive revenue.
