Shopify's built-in SEO foundation is solid, but most stores leave significant ranking potential untouched. The platform handles technical basics like XML sitemaps, mobile responsiveness, and SSL automatically, so your optimization effort should focus on what Shopify doesn't handle well: keyword research, content strategy, and competitive positioning.

Start with your product pages since they're the revenue-generating assets your clients care about most. Each product needs a unique, keyword-focused title and meta description—not the manufacturer's generic names. The title should front-load your primary keyword while remaining readable (think "organic cotton yoga mat" rather than "yoga mat, organic"). For the meta description, include a benefit statement alongside your target keyword since CTR directly impacts rankings. Shopify's default product descriptions are often thin, so expand them with genuine value. Cover material, dimensions, care instructions, and use cases. This gives you more real estate for keyword variations and reduces bounce rate. The image alt text field is overlooked in most Shopify stores—fill it with descriptive text including keywords where natural, since Google reads this. Handle URL structure by enabling "show product options in URL" selectively only when necessary, as it can create duplicate content problems.

Category and collection pages are your second priority. Create cornerstone content around high-volume category keywords instead of leaving these as thin product feeds. Write 200-300 word descriptions explaining the category, including related keywords and internal link opportunities. Link related collections to each other, and always link from collections back to relevant blog content. Many agencies miss this entirely, but it's where category keyword rankings actually come from.

The blog is where Shopify stores typically fail hardest. Most run abandoned blogs or treat them as promotional channels rather than ranking assets. Identify informational keywords your target customer searches before buying—"how to choose a yoga mat" not "buy yoga mats." Write 1200+ word posts targeting these, then link internally to relevant products and collections using exact-match anchor text. This drives organic traffic that already has purchase intent, and it's one of the few ways to rank for commercial keywords without competing purely on domain authority.

Finally, configure Shopify's URL structure to avoid trailing slashes inconsistencies, set a preferred domain in Google Search Console, and monitor crawl errors monthly. Most ranking improvements come from content strategy and internal linking, not Shopify-specific features.
