Wix has built-in SEO tools, but they're limited compared to what you can achieve on WordPress or custom platforms. Start with the basics: ensure your client's site has a readable URL structure (Wix allows custom URLs for pages), add meta descriptions to every important page through the Wix SEO panel, and write unique title tags. These foundational elements matter most for ranking potential. Wix automatically creates a sitemap and manages robots.txt, which is helpful, but you'll want to verify the sitemap in Google Search Console and ensure important pages aren't accidentally blocked from indexing.

For on-page optimization, Wix pages support heading tags and you can add alt text to images directly in the editor. The platform doesn't make internal linking obvious, but you can link between pages using anchor links in text and menus. Write naturally for users first—Wix's mobile responsiveness is solid, so don't worry about that. Content quality and relevance matter more than keyword density, just as they do on any platform. If your client has a blog, use that for pillar content and link back to service pages where contextually relevant.

The real limitation with Wix is what you can't do. You can't install advanced SEO plugins, can't modify server-side settings easily, and can't implement schema markup beyond basic options Wix exposes. You won't get granular control over crawl budget or redirect chains. For competitive keywords in difficult niches, this hurts your chances. If your client is in local SEO, at least get their business information consistent across their Wix site and Google Business Profile—this matters more than any platform quirk.

Don't oversell Wix for SEO to prospects. It's fine for small businesses in low-competition markets or as a platform choice they've already made. But if a prospect asks you to rank a competitive service business in a tough market on Wix, be honest about the constraints. You can do respectable work optimizing a Wix site, but you're working within narrower boundaries than you'd have elsewhere. Focus your effort on content quality, technical basics, and backlink building—the factors that work regardless of platform.
