Shopify's built-in SEO capabilities are solid, but they require intentional configuration and content strategy to work effectively. Start by optimizing your product and collection pages with target keywords. Each product page needs a unique, descriptive title (under 60 characters) and meta description (under 160 characters) that naturally includes your primary keyword. Shopify automatically generates these from your product title and first 160 characters of description if you don't customize them, which often results in thin or duplicate content. Go beyond that by editing the SEO title and meta description fields in each product's search engine listing preview. For collection pages, do the same thing—avoid letting Shopify auto-generate your collection descriptions, since these often become thin or redundant across similar categories. Handle your URL structure carefully. Shopify defaults to domain.com/products/product-name and domain.com/collections/collection-name, which is fine, but avoid unnecessary URL parameters and avoid changing URLs after indexing unless you implement 301 redirects (Shopify handles this through URL aliases, which you can set in your product editor).

Your site structure and internal linking matter significantly. Create a logical hierarchy where collection pages sit one level below your homepage and products sit under collections. This helps search engines understand context and distributes page authority sensibly. Link strategically from collection pages to related products and vice versa using descriptive anchor text. Shopify automatically generates a sitemap at domain.com/sitemap.xml and robots.txt, which is helpful, but verify they're working properly and that you're not blocking important pages with noindex tags.

Content-wise, Shopify's built-in blog is valuable for topical authority. Write blog posts that target informational keywords related to your products—"how to choose a running shoe" for a shoe store, for example—then link naturally back to relevant product pages. This drives both traffic and internal link equity. Finally, handle the technical basics: ensure your site is mobile-friendly (Shopify themes are responsive by default, but test yours), use Shopify's built-in image optimization to keep page speed reasonable, and set up Google Search Console and Google Analytics integration to monitor performance. Don't rely on Shopify's analytics alone for SEO insights. Most Shopify limitations come from insufficient content strategy and poor internal linking, not the platform itself.
