Yoast SEO handles most basic schema markup automatically once you activate the plugin and configure it properly. Start by going to your WordPress dashboard, then navigate to SEO > Settings > Search Appearance. In the Content Types tab, you'll see toggles for different post types (Posts, Pages, Products, etc.). Make sure the content types you want to appear in search results are enabled. Then move to the Schema tab within those same settings, where you'll find options to configure your site's basic schema like Organization, Person, or Logo. Upload your site logo here—Yoast uses this for Schema markup. Fill in your organization name and if applicable, your business information. This foundational setup generates Organization schema automatically across your site.
For individual pages and posts, Yoast adds an "Advanced" tab in the editor where you can set the article type (whether something is an article, blog post, product review, etc.) and mark the primary focus keyword. The plugin also has a dedicated Schema tab in the Advanced section where you can manually add specific schema types. This is where you'd add FAQPage schema for pages with frequently asked questions, HowTo schema for instructional content, or Review schema for review content. Simply select the schema type from the dropdown and fill in the required fields. For more complex implementations like Product schema with detailed pricing and availability, or Event schema with multiple dates, you fill in the respective fields that Yoast provides.
If you need schema markup that Yoast doesn't natively support—like custom LocalBusiness variations or specialized schemas—you'll need to add custom code. Go to SEO > Settings > Advanced and scroll to the Code Snippets section where you can paste custom JSON-LD schema. Alternatively, use a code snippets plugin like Code Snippets to manage custom markup separately from Yoast. Always test your schema implementation using Google's Rich Results Test or Schema.org's validator to ensure proper formatting. Yoast does a solid job with standard schemas, but knowing when to supplement with custom code makes you more valuable to clients needing industry-specific markup like legal services, medical practices, or e-commerce sites with complex product variations.
